Swindon celebrated St. George's Day 2009 in very big style with a towering new icon for the town - the world's biggest St. George! The giant figure, standing at nearly six metres tall, led a procession through the town centre on Saturday 25th April, accompanied by another giant (Christopher from Salisbury) and local groups including Bollywood dancers and Brownies, and several hundred astonished photographers! The procession went without a hitch, until it became clear that George was so huge that some of Swindon's buildings could not cope - the bridge across Canal Walk proved to be too low! But George is a true Swindonian, and navigating complicated roadways didn't daunt him at all - with a bit of help from everyone present, the two giants ducked down and limboed gracefully under the bridge and carried on! The giants and their entourage arrived in Wharf Green and carried on the fun with virtual football, African drumming and a variety of old English movies served up on the Big Screen. The whole day, sponsored by inSwindon and Nationwide, was organised to celebrate Swindon's rich place in today's, multi-ethnic England. The following day, George had his first away day promoting Swindon in Christopher's home city of Salisbury. Next year, organisers are planning something even bigger!
