A touch of Kenya comes to The Brunel
On Saturday 5th June shoppers will notice something distinctly African about The Brunel in Swindon, as the shopping centre receives a visit from four members of the Maasai tribe.
Part of Kenya’s best-known tribe, the Maasai visitors will be putting on a range of activities for shoppers to join in with and enjoy. As well as being able to watch performances of dance and songs, members of the public will be invited to have their photograph taken while wearing the Maasai’s tribal robes, hear short talks about the Maasai culture and have the opportunity to buy traditional African pieces made by the tribe.
Sharon Cushny from The Maasai Arts and School Agency International, who has organised the visit, said: “The Maasai is a tribe that most people have heard of but very few people know very much about. This visit will give members of the public the opportunity to find out about the Maasai culture and history in a fun and interactive way.”
Sharon Washbourne, sales and promotions manager at The Brunel, said: “This is really a very exciting visit for The Brunel and I’m sure it will be very popular with shoppers of all ages.
“The visitors are part of The Maasai Arts and School Agency International, which was founded in 2004 and works with people from different communities to share their culture.
“Whether you’re interested in watching the performances of songs and dances, would like to hear about the Maasai culture and history, or want to join in and have your photograph taken in traditional tribal robes, there really will be something for everyone.”
The Maasai visitors will be situated on the first floor of The Brunel Plaza, between Boots and Marks & Spencer, between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 5th June 2010.
