Bin It for Britain

Pupils from a Swindon school will get the lowdown on litter during a special visit to Swindon Town Centre on Friday 14th May. The children, from Nythe Primary School, will collect rubbish and learn about which materials can be recycled during the visit, which has been organised by inSwindon in partnership with McDonald’s.

The visit is part of a wider project on recycling which involves the whole school.  Other activity includes the appointment of ‘eco-warriors’; students who are responsible for saving energy by turning off lights, taps and other equipment around the school, and a special waste-free lunchbox day that is being organised by teachers at the school.

Rita Cockram, who teaches the 34 children from Squirrels Class who will be visiting the Town Centre, said: “The children are very excited about the visit, and I’m looking forward to it too.  This is a good, fun and practical way for the children to learn about recycling.”

Paul Booth from McDonald’s said: “It’s important that children learn about recycling from a young age, so it’s fantastic to have this opportunity to work with Nythe Primary School and inSwindon.

“We all have a responsibility to recycle and I think it’s important that businesses like McDonald’s do our bit to help educate young people so that we get as many people recycling as possible and cut down on waste.”

The children will be greeted by Paul Booth from McDonald’s and Simon Jackson, chief executive of inSwindon.  Following a health and safety talk by a member of the inSwindon Street Team, the children will split into teams to collect the litter and split it into recyclable and non-recyclable.  Helping the children to sort the litter will be the Deputy Mayor of Swindon, Rex Barnett, who will present the children with certificates before they are all guests of McDonald’s for lunch.  The children will also have a presentation from Swindon Commercial Services about the importance of recycling.

As a thank you for their hard work, and to encourage them to keep recycling, the school will be presented with a prize, kindly donated by McDonald’s.
