Wimbledon Comes to Wharf Green

If you don’t have Centre Court tickets for this year’s Wimbledon finals, don’t despair. inSwindon is all set to bring all the atmosphere of SW19 to SN1.

Shoppers will be able to watch much of the BBC coverage on the Big Screen in Wharf Green during Wimbledon fortnight (starting on June 22).

Then, on Friday, July 3 – men’s semi-finals day – Wharf Green will be turned into a full-size tennis court, where coaches from sports and leisure club Next Generation will be giving tips to schoolchildren (9.30am-11.30am) and other budding Andy Murrays from the general public (11.30am-2.30pm).

Shoppers will be able to watch the climax to the Championships – the women’s and men’s singles finals – on the Big Screen on Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5. Chairs will be provided. There will be time to do some shopping or grab some refreshments before and after, and there is also a bouncy castle for younger members of the family who may not be quite so interested in the tennis.

“This is going to be a weekend to remember,” said Simon Jackson, chief executive of inSwindon, “especially if Andy Murray does as well as we’re all hoping. We think it’s the closest you can get to the excitement of actually being there, and it could turn out to be a real ‘I was there’ event.”
