Street smart
Our Street Team will be friendly, informed, helpful and reassuring faces on the streets of the BID area. They will also play a crucial role in the delivery of other important BID projects.
street smart
  • weekly ‘hotspot’ cleaning in areas outside of Council control
  • additional removal of graffitti and fly posters
  • moving on of beggars, street drinkers and anti-social elements
  • moving on any illegal street traders and peddlars
  • maintaining planting and other BID assets on the street
  • on the ground CCTV monitoring and rapid response
The ‘public face’ of the inSwindon BID, our team of six will work in pairs to keep our streets safer, cleaner and greener. Highly visible in smart “inSwindon” uniforms the team will be carefully recruited and trained to deal with the public and to support the Police and private security staff.

They will also be very involved in the evenings, liasing with licensed premises, and helping to get people home promptly and safely at the end of the night.

We’d intend to extend the town centre CCTV network across the whole BID Area using wireless broadband technology. Equipped with wi-fi enabled PDAs, the BID Street Team will access images from any camera on the ground in ‘real time’; providing a rapid response and, where necessary, ensuring efficient communications with the police.

A small extra investment will let us ‘piggyback’ the system to create a public wi-fi zone across the whole BID Area.

Charging people a relatively modest amount for usage will soon pay back the additional set-up costs and from there on give us another source of revenue to invest back in the BID.

It will be another first for the UK in Swindon, great PR for the town and really help change peoples’ perception.

Money bags
As part of our plans to make recycling easier for everyone in the BID Area we’re going to work with a company who will give us 100,000 shopping bags made from recycled paper for every 18 tonnes of paper they collect. In turn we’ll give these bags to any retailer or trader in the BID that wants them.

It’ll cost you nothing. And think what you’ll save.

By providing white or brown bags and the option to have them branded, our aim is to make the BID area completely free of ‘disposable’ plastic bags within the next five years. Not by trying to punish people for using them, but by giving you an easier and cheaper alternative.
